The Lark by Glinka

The picture the composer intended to paint, as suggested by the title, could be a lark, flying away and reminiscing happier memories in the past, until it eventually finds peace and balance from within. This reflects into Glinka’s own life, as the composer dedicated the piece as a farewell to his music conservatory, St. Petersburg; saddened by leaving yet looking forward to a new beginning elsewhere.

The Lark creates beautiful yet bittersweet images. The piece has an undercurrent of sadness and longing whereas sparkles of calm and peaceful moments. It resonates listeners’ experiences and memories, as the music describes the experience of constantly looking back before a new journey, unsure yet hopeful.

Fantasie-Impromptu by Chopin

With a stronger and seemingly worried pace, the popular Fantasie-Impromptu begins. Growing and continuing its fast flow, the music flashes between deeper, darker emotions and sweet, savored moments. This contrast gives way to the beautiful middle section, then recurs again, even stronger and darker. Finally, it slows and peacefully fades away. This piece highlights the shifting and often fleeting emotions of the human mind, as thoughts and memories flash through.

The Impromptu was published posthumously, and the details and thoughts behind the piece are now lost to History. However, many of Chopin’s pieces share the same sadness and purity, perhaps due to the opposing natures of sadness and hope he held inside. At 20 years old, Chopin was exiled from Poland, his homeland. As a result, he never truly felt at home, expressing his loss and memories in his music.

INSPIRING VISUAL ARTS

Escape

This painting is about escape, not negatively, but in a sense of breaking free and finding a new direction. The blurry and wave-like shapes on the bottom shows how thoughts and emotions can sometimes feel messy, while the sharp triangles moving outward represent pushing forward over challenges. The golden circle symbolizes dreams and hopes, or a place of calm.

The artist believes it connects to the brain as it showing how our minds are always changing, sometimes chaotic, sometimes structured. It’s like how the brain makes new pathways, helping us grow, heal, and move toward something better.

Can’t Let Go

This art piece depicts the feeling of addiction, shown through the figure tightly holding on, yearning for a pleasure sensation represented by a spark of light. This figure composed of clay symbolizes how human psychological behavior is like a piece of clay, easily shaped and molded by external factors in our surroundings.

At the center, sharp, radiant beams of light represent a brief but powerful surge of pleasure felt when the reward system is activated in the brain, releasing neurotransmitters such as dopamine. The figure’s intense grip reflects the brain’s craving for more, demonstrating the cycle of addiction driven by these chemical rewards.
